Christmas Craftiness

I love Christmas and in our home we have at least 4 and sometimes 5 Christmas trees.  My storage room overflows with Christmas decor and going out shopping the day after Christmas for new Hallmark ornaments and hitting Target is a tradition for me.

We had a girls getaway last week and we headed to the cabin.  I brought along 3 of my best crafty pals because I knew they could help me with some of my decorating plans and we need to get a jump start if I am going to stay on top of decorating 2 homes for Christmas.

Here is the beginning of our ornament making...I have specific plans for these, but I will keep it to myself for now because I tend to change my mind a lot. :)

We took a little field trip to The Incredible Christmas Place, where I had intended to peruse the trees and look at what was available.  I didn't plan to make any purchases.  However, when I saw this:
AND that they had layaway ( I have no where to store it currently)...well, I made a quick decision and now this baby is waiting for me.
It is 12 feet tall, pre-lit and flocked.  I know I am biased, but I think we will have the prettiest tree in all of Pigeon Forge!

Recipe Thursday- Crockpot Chicken Dip

Fall is here and that means FOOTBALL.  Football games are best enjoyed with snack, appetizers and dips.  Here is a dip that is regularly served at our house for many occasions- it is good, filling AND easy.

No need to pack up your crock pot for your trip either, because we have one already!

Crockpot Chicken dip
2 pkg boneless chicken breasts
2 jars of salsa ( I use one mild and 1 medium)
2 blocks of Velveeta Mexican Cheese
[NOTE:  when we first started making this dip, there was only 1 size of Mexican velveeta cheese and it was a small block, I believe they make a bigger version now, so if you use the bigger version, you will only need 1 block]
Spray crock pot with nonstick cooking spray and place chicken inside.  Pour both jars of salsa over the chicken.  Cover and cook on Low for 8 hours or on High for 4 hours.
After the chicken has cooked, use 2 forks to shred the chicken.
Cut the velveeta into cubes and place into the crockpot. If your crockpot was on Low, turn it to High.  Stir every few minutes until the cheese has melted and Serve. Don't forget to turn the crockpot back to Low or it can scorch quickly.
We use tortilla chips to dip ours with.
I have to give a shout to my sister in law Michelle since she introduced us to this recipe.  She also likes to serve the chicken dip over baked potatoes as well.

Even the rain is peaceful....

I love it when it rains while we are at the cabin.  It is so soothing and peaceful.  The smoke rolls in and the rain falls steadily, meanwhile you can still relax on the covered decks and enjoy the view.

Here is a sample of what I am talking about, this video was taken by me at our cabin during a recent storm.

When big storms roll in, the lightening show is just beautiful.  That can also sometimes mean a power outage.  At Cinematastic View, we have thought ahead and prepared for such a moment.  On each floor there are rechargeable flashlights plugged in at the bottom or top of the stair well (depending on which level you are on).  These lights are to be set in the "on" position so that in case of a power failure they turn on automatically and you will be able to use them.

It is the little details that make your stay with us that much more enjoyable!  I delight in thinking of the little things and when guests tell me that I have done a good job it is a great feeling!!

If you are thinking of visiting Pigeon Forge or the Smoky Mountains in the near future, please consider Cinematastic View for your home away from home.

Resort Feature-- Miniature Golf

Our cabin is jam packed with things to do as well as ways to relax.

However, there are times when you just want to get out and enjoy some fresh air and not have to go to the Parkway and spend more money!  Our miniature golf course fills the bill perfectly.  Take the kids down to get them out of the way while dinner is being prepared, or while the baby takes a nap.  Grab another couple and play a round, winner gets to choose the movie that night.  Take the whole family and have some family bonding over 9 holes of mini golf.

Jump in the car and take the short drive (1.5 minutes!) down to the course and enjoy some good old fashioned fun!  It's close, it's fun and best of all it's FREE!

As I type this, brand new putters, kiddie putters (plastic so the little ones can't give you bruises!) and colorful golf balls are on their way to the cabin.  They will be located in the upstairs master bathroom closet.

What To Bring With You When You Stay With Us...

Many times I get asked what items guests should bring with them for their stay.   We have had an array of visitors, some are seasoned travelers to the Great Smoky Mountains and for others it is their first visit.

Here are the things that I recommend that you bring with you for your stay:

  • toiletries
  • hair dryer
  • beach towels
  • pool toys/goggles/sunscreen
  • paper towels
  • garbage bags
  • dishwasher detergent
  • laundry detergent (if you plan to wash any clothes/towels)
  • coffee filters
  • sugar
  • flour
  • spices
  • ziplock bags
  • aluminum foil
  • video games for xbox or wii
  • movies
  • laptop/ipad/kindle

There is a starter set of paper towels, dish soap, dishwasher detergent and 2 garbage bags supplied for you.  Anything you need beyond that you will need to provide.

I like to bring along my own flour/sugar and any spices I know I am going to need.  There are 2 grocery stores (Kroger) where you can shop for food when you arrive.  I like to bring aluminum foil and gallon ziplock bags to help me with leftover food storage.  We have a Mr. Coffee coffee pot that uses regular basket style filters.  I have cooking spray in the cabinet for your use with our stainless steel pans and SOS pads under the sink to help with clean up.  I try to supply a salt and pepper shaker, but they keep disappearing. :)

Although Hair Dryers are on our list of items to add to the cabin over the next year, for now you need to bring your own.  We will be sure to let you know here on the blog AND on our Facebook Page when they are installed.

Coming in October we will be providing our guests with a hotel-like supply of shampoo, conditioner, lotion and bar soap.  While we are excited about this amenity that we are adding, please understand that  these won't last for a week long stay!  All of our bathrooms will have a fresh roll of toilet paper, but if you think you could run out- be sure and bring an extra roll along with you!

We have a Wii and an XBOX 360 as well as an assortment of games for you to play.  If you or your kids have a game they just love, be sure to bring it along.

There is a DVD player in the main great room, the game room, the bunk room and in the theater room. The theater room DVD player will play Blu-Ray movies.  We don't currently have a stock of movies at the cabin, although we are starting to collect them now so that we can provide them at a later date.  If there is something you would like to watch on the big screen, bring it along!!

All of our beds have pillows and most rooms have an extra that you will find in a drawer.  If you need your pillow, be sure to bring it along!

Bring your beach towels and pool toys to use at the pool and the hot tubs.  We have hooks provided on the side of the main deck of the cabin to hang your towels.  You are welcome to hang them over the railing, but the hooks keep you from losing them to a big gust of wind and protecting them from rain.  I do have a supply of beach towels at the cabin in case someone forgets.

Remember we do have free WIFI at the cabin, so you can stay connected.  Bring along

I hope this list is helpful to you when packing for your trip and we look forward to having you as our guests!!

Unique + Rustic + Useful= Awesomeness!

I came to the cabin for a night on Wednesday.  While running errands, I came across this piece of fabulous-ness:

I had to have it!!  It originally had a retro Jack Daniels graphic on it, which I have to say I really liked.   I preferred the Coca-Cola sign and they switched it out for me.  Do you see the spigot for draining?  I have plans to attach a hose and pipe it over to the edge of the deck, but for now no standing below unless you want an ice cold shower!

I was almost giddy as they loaded it into my van.

When you lift the lid, this is what you find:

Yippeee!  A cooler!  Here is the perfect spot to load up some beverages and cover them with ice.  They will stay nice and cold and it is conveniently located outside the back door.
This will also help out the refrigerator.  When several families all arrive with drinks and food in tow- it all gets loaded in the fridge and all those hot drinks take a toll on the fridge.  We learned that this weekend!  But really,  I just love it because it looks cool!

I have to admit that bolting it to the deck was one of my favorite things.  Sorry, no rearranging -- but mostly no borrowing to other cabins!  We are learning that other cabin guests come on our deck and "borrow" things.  We've had our pillows taken off of our loveseats, buckets for cigarettes taken and we are pretty sure someone switched out their empty propane tank for our full one.  (Those are now locked to the grill, so that won't happen again!)

Recipe Thursday

I'd love to share with you a grilled chicken recipe that everyone in our family can agree on.  With 4 kids, having everyone agree isn't something that happens often.

To make this vacation friendly, I suggest mixing up the spices at home and bringing them with you in a ziplock bag labeled "Lime Chicken".  It will make preparation quick and easy at the cabin.

Spicy Garlic Lime Chicken

Ingredients

  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves
  • 2 or 3 limes
  •
  • 1. In a glass baking dish, sprinkle chicken breasts with spices.  Squeeze limes over chicken and let marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  • 2. Preheat an outdoor grill for high heat.
  • 3.Lightly oil the grill grate. Discard marinade, and grill chicken 6 to 8 minutes on each side, until juices run clear.
  •
  • It isn't too spicy and you can use more limes and let marinate a little longer to infuse the lime flavor.
  •
  • We like to make guacamole with this and sometimes slather it on top!
  •
  • Enjoy!

Christmas in July---- er... August!

I guess this is the week that people have begun to think about and make their plans for the holiday season.  I have come to this conclusion because I have had a flood of inquiries that revolve around Christmas and New Years.
I am anxious to see who is going to commit and what lucky family will choose our cabin for their holiday celebration.
Some of my facebook friends will remember this photo:
This was my cart in Target on the day after Christmas.  It is a tradition that I get up early the day after Christmas and shop at Target and Hallmark.  I have been collecting Hallmark ornaments since 1992!  I love buying things the day after because the next year I have new material to work with.  It is a lucky thing that I have a storage room for all of this, but my husband keeps telling me we have enough!!  I love Christmas and I love decorating for Christmas.
This year, I had my sights set on buying things for our cabin.  Keep in mind that on the day after Christmas we didn't own a cabin.  My husband saw that as an obstacle, I however used my positive attitude and girlie rationale to say "half off now or full price next year, you pick!"  I don't mean to make Barry sound like a grinch.  He isn't really.  He just likes to give me a hard time about my Christmas obsession collecting.
Last year I also made these for our dining room table, with the idea that next Christmas they would belong to the cabin.

I am going to go with a very natural and cabin-y Christmas using burlap, muslin, red and silver.
I have a board on Pinterest for Cabin Christmas Inspiration, you can check it out here:
http://pinterest.com/sherriv/cabin-christmas-ideas/
I would love it if you would follow me there!

I think it is safe to say that no one will be disappointed in the decorations.  I have seen other cabin's version of Christmas decorating that involves the cheapest tree from Walmart and some silk ball ornaments.  Some don't even have lights!  It is expensive to rent cabins at Christmastime and I want my guests to leave feeling like they got their moneys worth.

I also have plans to treat them to something special and a little different.  I have some family members that spend their Christmas' in vacation rentals.  They have told me that they bring along supplies to create their own ornaments to add to the tree to give it their own touch/feel.
I thought this was a fabulous idea and so I am planning on gathering some supplies and printing up the instructions for their family to create some ornaments to use while they are there and then to take home with them to remember their special trip.
Right now, this is my favorite.  I would love to hear your opinions on this.
http://christopherandtia.blogspot.com/2010/12/handmade-yarn-wreath-ornaments-2010.html

I have a few other surprises for them, but in case they end up reading this blog, I don't want to ruin everything!
Can you believe that I just sent 2 children off to the first day of school and I am already thinking about Christmas??  After writing this post, I feel a trip to the Hobby Lobby Christmas aisles are in order!

OberGatlinburg Fun

OberGatlinburg is one of my favorite places to visit when in Pigeon Forge.  If you have never been, I encourage you to devote one day of your next vacation to going.
You can visit their website at www.obergatlinburg.com for pricing, directions and hours.
We have always ridden the tram up, but you can save some $$ and time and drive directly there.
Some tips for riding the tram.  If you are bringing a stroller, it will need to be folded up for your ride.   It is usually crowded in the tram and there will be someone in there who is terrified of heights or the ride in general.  You will enter the tram on one side, when you reach the top, you exit out the opposite side. You do swing a little when you go over the poles, this is normal and you will be okay! :)
Once you reach the top you will find that OberGatlinburg is like its own little town.  There are shops, an arcade, carousel and some eateries inside.  There is also an ice skating rink.  Be sure to have a sample of fudge while you are there as well.
As you exit the main building this is where you will find all of the outdoor activities.
On the website you can read about the ticket and arm band options that are available to you.  I purchased the full deal for my boys the last time we were there.
They all tried their hand at ice skating....

When you go outside, there are many activities to keep your kids busy.  If you don't have the budget to buy an armband, you need to be aware of all of the fun things that are going to catch the eyes of your little ones.  The first time that we visited OberGatlinburg, I had no idea what to expect.  We had just left the aquarium and planned to ride up to the top to see the view.  I was not aware of all of the other things (that cost money) that I would find.  Our kids were very disappointed because we didn't have time for ice skating, nor the money to send them all (4 of them) to ride the water flumes etc.  So, part of the purpose of this post is to help you avoid that!!
There is a maze for the kids, as well as the swing ride that you find at your local fair.
There is also a fun water ride.  The kids walk up these stairs:

And ride down an enclosed spiral slide on an inflatable raft.  You can hear the laughing and squealing as they come down.

Sometimes they get soaked and other times not as much.  There are height minimums to this ride and I think there is some sort of weight requirement.
With the arm band they were able to ride it over and over and over.
There is an area for smaller children that have this ride:

and this FREE playground:

There is another water slide over in this area as well. The slides are straight and one is enclosed most of the way down and the other is completely open.  The heavier the weight of the slide the farther (and probably faster) you go.

There is a ski lift that takes you to the top of the mountain.  The view from up there is absolutely amazing.  I did not go up on this trip, although I did purchase tickets to do so. :(
On a smoky (cloudy) day, your view will be compromised, so try to choose a clear day for this adventure.  There are places to sit down at the top, and usually there is some sort of live music being played.  By now you have worked up a thirst, and lucky you-- they have drink machines up here.  Keep your dollar bills handy!!
The fun part about the ski lift to the top is the chicken out area.  Not quite halfway up you have the opportunity to bail on your trip and ride a slide back down to the bottom.  My kids were really excited to try this.  Yes, I sent these two on their own to ride the slides.  I was a nervous wreck, but I didn't have a lot of choices.  Either send them together, or I ride with one of them and let the other ride alone.
Don't worry, I came home with both of them.

This is how they come back down...

and you can see the covered straight slide to the right.

With the arm bands they can ride these over and over.
There is also a wildlife encounter that I have yet to visit.  There are several different animals there, but the ones I want to see are the otters and the bears.  If you go and get pictures, be sure and send me some!!!
I hope this helps give you an idea of what to expect if you decide to give OberGatlinburg a try.

More Ways to Relax---

I have been playing on Amazon.com, a dangerous thing for sure.  I made some purchases that were not first approved by the General Counsel (my husband)- but don't worry, he is used to it. ;)

On their way to my home and soon to be brought to the cabin are 2 of these:
They will be placed in the theater room for use, but can be moved to the bunk room to sit and play the Wii.  They weigh 38 pounds, so they are very solid and sturdy.  We have a couple of bean bags here at the house and the kids love to sit on them to play the wii here.  2 kids easily fit on one bean bag and they are super comfy!

The deck outside of the game room is gaining a comfy seating option.
2 of these are on their way as well!!
The reviews were splendid and they hold up to 350 pounds each, which is why they won out over some of the other options.

When they are ready for use I will be sure to pass that along- including photos!!
Happy Friday- We are heading to the cabin tomorrow with friends!

After A Week+ at the Cabin....

I have a lot to post about!

First we made some upgrades and additions to the cabin while we were there.

In 4 of the bathrooms, we added these shelves above la toilette.  Perfect for putting your deodorant, hairspray, make up and other toiletries.  We are searching for a wooden shelf for the bunk room bathroom-  you know, something less breakable!

We also added a foosball table.  A very nice Harvard table that will be lots of fun for the kids or the grown ups to play with.  We chose to put this in the theater room.

You may or may not be able to tell that we reconfigured the seating in the theater room.  There are still 9 seats, but now there are 2 rows of 4 and a single seat is at the rear next to the foosball table.

The biggest upgrade we made was also in the theater room.  We have a new projector!
A very spiffy Epson High Definition Projector replaces the old Epson that was NOT High Definition.  The difference in the picture is nothing short of AMAZING.
Then dear ole DirecTV came out and hooked up the HD receiver that we had waiting for him and you can now watch television, movies or play XBOX 360 on the big screen.

We purchased and added these chairs to the game room.  The table that came with the cabin only had one chair and we knew that would never do.  I searched and found these chairs that look fabulous with the table, I couldn't have found a closer match if I tried!!

We thought our cabin was pretty rockin' already- and these additions make it even more awesome!  We have a few more fun things up our sleeve that I will keep to myself, but I can tell you that soon to come will be the addition of an arcade game!!  Whoop Whoop!

If you are considering a stay with us, I would love to chat with you.  I can tell you over the phone why our cabin is the best option around! :)

Bring on the Babes....

and I don't mean the kind in two piece swimsuits....
I mean the kind that are crawling and starting to walk and getting into everything, but haven't mastered things like stairs yet.
You can relax because we have two of these:

The gates are removable, so for our guests that do not have young children, they are kept in a closet out of the way.
After coming to the mountains several times with toddlers of my own and having to purchase baby gates at wal-mart and then trust that they would hold---- I know this is a wonderful feature.  One I would have appreciated!
So...as I said, bring on the babes and come visit us at Cinematastic View, where we strive to be family friendly.  :)

Under Construction

If you are new to our blog- please forgive the mess as I work on a new design.
HTML is a completely foreign language to me, but I am learning as I go!!
:)

Restaurant Recommendation

Log Cabin Pancake House

Located at Light 10 off of the Pigeon Forge Parkway on the left.

I have wanted to try this restaurant for quite some time and finally got the chance yesterday.  We had a table of 9... 2 adults and 7 kids.  Yes, we were outnumbered. :)
Our server was awesome.  I can't say enough about her.  She was great with the kids, very exuberant and almost enthusiastic about serving our breakfast.  Her name was Pam if you want to request her.
The food arrived quickly and HOT.  Everyone was pleased with their choice.  The french toast got a double thumbs up from my sister in law.  The bacon was crispy and delicious.  Eggs were cooked correctly and we all left fully and happy.  Well, I left with a headache, but that was my fault for waiting too long to eat!
As for pricing, it isn't cheap- but it is inline with most other area restaurants.  The atmosphere isn't fancy, but is very quaint.  They are open until 2 p.m. and also serve lunch and had a lunch buffet.  I meant to look over the buffet, but refer back to my comment about having a headache.  I forgot!

Vacationing with Little Ones? We Got This...

So, you're going on vacation and you have young children.  You've made a list of everything you need to bring with you and you already feel overwhelmed before stepping foot out of the house.
Relax!  We have got you covered.  Now I know we don't have everything, but we have certainly thought of enough to lighten your load.
Let me tell you some of the things we have at Cinematastic View to make our home family friendly.

For sleeping, we have a pack 'n play.  We ask that you bring your own bedding.  To give you peace of mind, we have a baby monitor in the cabin for your use.
For eating we have 2 high chair options.  One for infants and small children- the Fisher Price space saver high chair.
This seat will attach to a regular chair for sitting up at the table and it will also recline so that you can feed your infant his or her baby food while they sit comfortably.
Our second option will also work for young toddlers who are able to sit on their own, but is also perfect for your 2, 3 or even 4 year old.
We have also provided for you an infant bath tub and there are a couple of infant towels if you forgot to bring yours.  Also provided is a portable infant swing made by fisher price.  Please do not your baby unattended in the swing.
We have some plastic bibs, baby spoons, bottle sterilizer, outlet plug covers and door knob covers as well, so you can be sure they won't wander out onto the decks unknowingly or into the bathrooms.
We have a very small selection of infant toys- I would say the ages of 6-20 months or so.  Not a lot, but maybe something different to help keep them occupied.
I am currently on the look out for a bumbo seat, a second pack 'n play and a bathtub ring.  When we have additions to our stash, we will let you know!!

The most beautiful sky....

was seen in Pigeon forge today!  The sky was such a beautiful blue with white fluffy clouds.  We enjoyed the holiday weekend at a friend's cabin in North Carolina.  On our way back home we stopped and spent the day enjoying the pool at Cinematastic View.

This sweet note was left by the guests who enjoyed our cabin for the holiday weekend:
This made all of the work that we have been doing so worth it!!
If you are thinking about booking a stay with us, we would love to have you as our guests!

Down Time + Friends/Family = Fun Times

So, you have spent the day shopping or hiking or riding go carts.  Dinner is over, it is getting dark and....now what?
Grab 1 or 2 or a the whole crew and enjoy one of the many card or board games that we have for you in the cabin.  Have you ever played Five Crowns?  If not, give it a whirl- you will love it.  Blokus is a wonderful game for 4 players- fun for children AND adults.  Almost all of the games we have here are family favorites at our house.
You will find them here:
arranged neatly on the main floor of the cabin.  There is a table close by that makes game playing easy.
If you want to take them to another level to play that is fine too.  All we ask is that you return them back to the game cabinet before you leave complete with all of the pieces.  It is no fun to get ready to play a game only to find that there are pieces missing!
Games not your thing?  Looking for something quiet and solitary?
This is our selection of books for you to read with a variety of genres and authors.  Did you bring a book and finish it already?  Just pick one of ours.  If you don't finish it before your stay is over, no sweat.  Leave us the book you finished and take the book you started. :)
If you have suggestions for authors, genres or specific book titles that you would like to see here, leave us a comment or send an email.  I am always looking for new books for the cabin.
As soon as I hit send on this post--- I am off to the cabin!!

Rear View

When you come to Pigeon Forge, pencil in a trip to Cades Cove.
This was my first time to visit Cades Cove, but it won't be my last.  We got up a 5 am.  Unfortunately a wrong turn and a need for gas delayed our trip, so we didn't get there are early as we had hoped.
Even still, the morning sky was beautiful and our quest to see a bear was fulfilled.
We knew that we were destined to see a bear as I had no memory card for my camera and the battery was dead.  All I had was my phone's camera and that isn't saying much.  We saw tons of deer, which if you look carefully you can see grazing across this field.
There were also turkeys, with the toms showing off their feathers for the girls.
We saw one bear with a frolicking cub and a coyote.
One bear isn't enough for us, so I am already planning a return trip when my gas tank is full and minus the wrong turn.
It is approximately a 40 minute drive to Cades Cove and depending on the traffic and how quickly or slowly you want to take things, it can take two hours or more to drive the 11 mile loop.  There are stops along the way where you can get out and check out various churches and homes.  Be sure to bring your camera, the scenery is gorgeous.
Here is a link for more information.  We have directions to Cades Cove for you in the manual at our cabin.

He is going to kill me for this but....

This is my 15 year old son.  It was raining while we were there and he took up residence on one of the loveseats.  Of course he was texting most of the time, but I still thought he was sweet snuggled up enjoying the smoky view during the rain.
We have a great Bluff Mountain view- but I especially enjoy it when the smoke rolls in.
We have a couple more trips to make to the cabin before everything is complete and our first guests come to stay.
I can hardly wait.

The Swing is Up!

This was our first purchase for the cabin after our closing.  We loved how comfortable this swing was and that is has built in cup holders!
It is the perfect spot to relax and take in the view.  This photo was taken on a rainy day, look how beautiful the mountains are.
Have you booked your stay with us yet?
